Specifying a Printer Path -- Printing without JPrint

Regardless of your printing method (TPPT or LPD/LPR) and your formatting method (Client side or Host side), you will need to tell your PC what printing route to follow when printing without JPrint. You can send a job immediately to a printer or send the print job to a file for later printing.

NOTE

See Understanding JPrint -- Windows Only for more information about the advantages and disadvantages of installing JPrint.

When printing to a local network printer, without JPrint, and with Microsoft® Internet Explorer, you can specify an “LPT’ printer name followed by a number (1, 2, 3, etc) in the Printer Path field.

If, however, you want to print to a remote printer or set up both Internet Explorer and Netscape® browsers to print, follow the steps below to print without JPrint. If the method below does not appear to work at first in Netscape Navigator, you will have to capture a printer port on your client Windows machine.

  1. Choose Printer Environments from the File menu. The Printer Environment window will open.

  2. When printing for the first time, click [New]. The Configure Printer window will open.

  3. Enter a device name in the Printer Device Name field.

OR

Select your printer. To use your Windows default printer, leave the Use Windows Default Printer checkbox checked. To select another printer, uncheck Use Windows Default Printer and click [Select Printer]. Select the printer you want to use from the list box. Click [OK].

  1. Complete the rest of the Configure Printer Connection window . See T27 Printer Pass-Through for explanations of these options.

  2. Click [OK]. The PPT environment will open with the environment name in the title bar. The word “Idle” appears in the window. This environment is now ready to receive print jobs.

  3. Save the configuration and exit out of the applet.

Testing the Printer Connection

  1. Inside the PPT environment, select Print Test Page from the Help menu.

If the test page does not print, then the Printer Pass Through is not talking to your printer. Check the settings on the Configure Printer window to make sure you have entered everything correctly.

When you open the user’s configuration you will now have access to a print environment as well as a terminal emulation environment.

NOTE

If there is a problem with your printer – such as it’s off or out of paper – the print job will be kept in the spooled output queue on the host. You will have to access it there and release it to the printer again once you correct the printer problem.
